Thursday thoughts - acetyl groups.

Who'd a thunk that something as simple as an acetyl group could be so useful?
Acetyl group on Wikipedia

A common substance which is mostly an acetyl group is acetic acid, the acid in vinegar. Vinegar has quite a few medical uses, as well as making fish & chips/fries taste great.

I was reading stuff on the internet (as you do ;-) ) when it occurred to me that several substances had acetyl groups in them, e.g. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) , Paracetamol/Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol), Heroin (diacetylmorphine), DCA (dichloroacetic acid), Acetylcholine, Acetyl-CoA, Acetylcysteine & Acetyl-L-carnitine.

Here's an amusing (unless you are/were an addict) snippet of information about Heroin (emphasis mine) from History:- "From 1898 through to 1910, diacetylmorphine was marketed under the trademark name Heroin as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough suppressant." Oh, whoops!

Acetylation makes substances more active in the body & increases their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, as well as having other functions in the body (e.g. changing the expression of proteins & genes).

What's going on?

Blatant music video alert!

I've had a cold so I haven't been blogging. I still went out almost every night gallivanting, taking only 4 x 2 Aspirin 300mg a day for three days. I just had a headache & muscle pains, so I wasn't coughing or sneezing over anybody. I avoided kissing mum goodbye so that she wouldn't catch what I had. Anyway, a week has passed and the huge amount of snot being produced by my body in an attempt to flush out bacteria has subsided, so here I am. My problem is that there's nothing much for me to to report. The bloggers in my blog list are producing new information. I spend some time each day reading those blogs. I occasionally add new blogs to the list. There are now 50 blogs in the list.

The world appears to be as full of f*ck-wits as it was when I last posted, based on people's appalling driving skills & poor vehicle maintenance (e.g. misaligned headlights that dazzle me at night or one dead headlight).

Are there many people sitting in baths of ice-cold water to try to live a bit longer? Sod that! I'd rather die young. It makes me want to say:-

World, I am Disappoint

The latest "wonder" drugs.

You may have read Aspirin 'cuts cancer death risk by 37 per cent'. 37 per cent, I tell ya!

Or even The £1.40 heart pill lifesaver: 10,000 patients a year could be saved by newly-licensed drug. Ivabradine cuts heart failure deaths by 39 per cent. 39 per cent, I tell ya!

Impressive, huh? Well, not really.

If you read Vitamin D and calcium supplementation reduces cancer risk: results of a randomized trial, you'll see that, taking the results from years 2 to 5 inclusive (to eliminate women who had cancer before the start of the study), there's a 77 per cent reduction in cancer deaths in the intervention group. Funny how that fact isn't trumpeted in the press.

If you read Dietary Intake of Menaquinone Is Associated with a Reduced Risk of Coronary Heart Disease: The Rotterdam Study, you'll see that a modest intake (greater than 32.7ug/day) of Vitamin K2 is associated with a 57 per cent reduction in heart attack deaths. There are far more heart attacks than heart failures. Funny how that fact isn't trumpeted in the press.

Look after your brain, Part 2.

Mum used to use a transdermal Natural Progesterone Cream (to reverse hair loss) but she stopped using it some time before she became mentally impaired. I found a half-full pot of the stuff in mum's house and have instructed the nursing staff to rub a blob of cream on mum's skin each day to see if it makes any improvement to her Lewy Body Dementia. See Regeneration in a degenerating brain: potential of allopregnanolone as a neuroregenerative agent , Regenerative potential of allopregnanolone and Progesterone receptors: form and function in brain.

Getting mum to eat more smoked salmon has definitely perked her up. I've also managed to re-introduce turmeric into her diet (she was spitting out the turmeric pills as they were large & unchewable) by getting the nursing staff to stir a teaspoonful of turmeric powder into her orange juice (I & she can't taste it) once every few days. Luckily, she never had any problems taking the Vitamin D3 & K2 capsules/gelcaps.

Finally, I'm trying to get mum on low dose Aspirin, as Aspirin inhibits the aggregation of proteins (synuclein, beta amyloid) on charged polymers in amyloid diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc., according to Dr Art Ayers. As mum has a hiatus hernia, which causes acid reflux, her GP may not allow her to do this even though mum is taking a Proton Pump Inhibitor and Gaviscon. See The role of anti-inflammatory drugs in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other anti-inflammatory agents in the treatment of neurodegenerative disease.
